Ahoy Sailors!
Saturday was a wash due to the weather, with four boats ready to sail. The evening festivities at the yacht club proved to be a time of fellowship and vittles filling the soul and the belly.
Sunday was set for make-up day, and makeup we did! Lost one boat, gained another. Four hearty skippers set out in 20-25 knots of wind on a 4.4-mile course from Goose Island to Wood Island, back to Sherwood Shores, and home again.
In the windiest race I've seen in two years, everyone handled their boats very well. There was one right of way violation, and that resulted in a swap between 2nd and 3rd place, which were separated by only 3 seconds on corrected time.
We will have a review of the rules of the road and points of sail prior to the next race on April 13th.
Race Results:
St. Pat's Day Regatta | BOAT/Racer |
1st Place | Into the Mystic / David Moore |
2nd Place | Encore / Dale Lake |
3rd Place | Lil Spice of Life / Chris Grassel |
4th Place | La Fortuna / David Burdette |
If anyone is interested in an April Fool's regatta on March 30th, let me know.
If there is sufficient interest, we will do it.

Ahoy sailors!
The 2024 racing season has begun!
On Saturday Feb 24, we had a skippers' meeting at 10 am. The lake was glass smooth, and the forecast was not cheery. We reconvened on the docks at 1:30 and reassessed the conditions. We opted for one lap around the course of 3.63 nautical miles. With a freshening breeze coming from the South, we set a start time of 2:30.
Four boats crossed the start line in pretty close proximity with about 5 to 8 knots of wind. The course was Windward-Leeward, and the breeze built a bit as we sailed.
There were some notable wind shifts during the race, skies were sunny, and temperatures in the upper 60's or low 70's.
Many thanks to all who sailed, and especially to Jim and Gayle Rogers, who blew the official start signal, motored along with the fleet taking pictures, and assisted picking up marks!
Standing | Boat | Elapsed Time | Corrected Time |
1st Place | Into the Mystic | 48:10 | 37:27 |
2nd Place | Concerto | 54:00 | 45:06 |
3rd Place | (Tom Watson) | 56:51 | 45:58 |
4th Place | Sea Fever II | 1:15:23 | 1:05:13 |
Note: We are going to work on a system to level the playing field for racers who are consistently well separated from the lead group. The aim is to make it more fun and more competitive for all participants.
Next race will be St. Patrick's day on March 16th. Course and format TBA
