Wireless Internet at Cedar Mills Yacht Club

Cedar Mills Yacht Club provides wireless Internet access to its members. Those in Middle and North Cove can access it from their boats. Just check the bulletin board in the yacht club for the access code. Keep in mind that this code changes every quarter, so if you cannot connect, check and see if the code has changed.
Equipment that works
Many have asked what inexpensive wireless equipment will allow them to get Internet access from their boat. Alot of that depends on several things. First, if your laptop is down below in your boat, is it next to metal or wiring? This can block many wireless signals. Next, if you stand on your boat and look in the direction of the yacht club, what is blocking it? If there are alot of trees or metal structures (such as the covers on L dock), then the signal also will be blocked.
You may fire up your laptop and get a good signal, but not be able to connect. Why? Because your laptop can "hear" the antenna at the yacht club, but it cannot talk loud enough for the yacht club antenna to hear your laptop!
All is not lost, though. With a few simple parts from your local computer store, you can get connected.
These parts have found to work not only at Cedar Mills Marina, but also in various anchorages in the Caribbean. You many not need all of them, but here are your options.
Wireless Network Adapter: Because the wireless built into your laptop has no external antenna, the first thing you need to do is get a wireless network adapter that fits in your USB port and allows for an external antenna that you can get out and visible to the antenna at the yacht club. An inexpensive item is a Hawking USB wireless adapter (HWUG1). This plugs into the USB port on your laptop.
Antenna: There are 2 different external antennas that you can use. A "directional" antenna (that must be pointed at the yacht club) is the Hawking Hi-Gain Directional Antenna (HAO9SDP) or the "omnidirectional" antenna (HAO15SIP) that you can permanently mount on your boat.
Booster: If you are still having signal problems, you can add the Hawking Signal Booster (HSB2). This will boast the signal from your laptop to the yacht club so that antenna can hear your laptop. This booster has been found to work even outside of the marina about 100 yards.
Extension Cables: Some of the cables may not be long enough, so you can either get a USB extension cable or an antenna extension cable (HAC30N). Give it a try.
